Benue State Deputy Governor, Sam Ode, Chairman, Governing Council of African Union Agenda 2063 Ambassadorial Assembly, Prof. Tunji Asaolu, and Chief Executive Officer of Vimma Glide Limited, Ojiah Victoria Ogwuche, have called for legislative support to empower women in business and politics.

Speaking at the Connect Her Summit 2024 in Abuja, themed ‘Rise and Thrive,’ they emphasized the importance of awareness and confidence in unlocking women’s potential.

Ode stressed that legislative support is essential for women’s empowerment, particularly in education, employment, and financial control.

He noted that economic empowerment transforms lives and structures, enabling women to overcome discrimination.

He said, “A woman must be aware of her potential and have the confidence to pursue and sustain it. Women should have the freedom to access opportunities in education, employment, and control over financial resources. Economic empowerment transforms lives and structures, empowering women to overcome discrimination.

“Talking about security, education, and economic freedom, access to these will help society achieve harmonious living.

“Legislation can ensure women have opportunities to unlock their potential. Educating women has a profound impact on society, especially in Nigeria.

“Women are the cornerstone of families, managing the home while men pursue careers. Providing women with education will enhance opportunities for their families.

“In Nigeria, despite cultural inhibitions in some areas, women are not restricted from rising to the top. Notable examples include Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former Minister of Finance, who is a global leader.

“Our history is filled with women who have unlocked their potential. Regarding gender justice, significant legislation has been enacted to address gender violence. Civil society organizations are raising awareness to combat violence against women.

“This requires a commitment from the National Assembly through legislation. In conclusion, I want to express my appreciation for their unwavering commitment to women’s empowerment.”

On her part, Chief Executive Officer of Vimma Glide Limited, Ojiah Victoria Ogwuche, highlighted the significance of education in empowering women, stating it spans all sectors, including business.

According to her, many women lack business knowledge and skills, hindering their growth.

She said, “When I talk about education, I don’t mean just classrooms. Educating women spans all sectors, including business.

“Many don’t thrive because they lack business knowledge and skills. Summits like this are crucial for educating women to grow in their sectors.

“Don’t just be a bench warmer; network and meet someone who can help your business grow. Today, we recognize those who have overcome business failures and risen again.”

In addition, Chairman, Governing Council of African Union Agenda 2063 Ambassadorial Assembly, Prof. Tunji Asaolu, emphasized providing women with resources and support systems to drive economic growth and innovation.

He argued that continued support for women in business is essential for inclusive economies and diversity in leadership.

Asaolu, who also serves as the Deputy Secretary-General of African Affairs of the International Society of Diplomats, stated: “Continued support for women in business is essential for inclusive economies, diversity in leadership, and creating an environment for women to thrive.

“By providing tools, skills, and networks, we can unlock women’s potential, benefiting individuals, communities, and achieving sustainable development goals.”

Also speaking, Ambassador of the Order of the AU Agenda 2063, Vivian Elegalam, stressed that women are the bedrock of any progressive society. Empowering women requires encouragement and support, particularly in business mentorships.

She stated, “Women are the bedrock of any progressive society. For a woman to rise and thrive, we must empower her. There are many areas, such as business mentorships, where women need support. Women who have risen to the top didn’t start from nowhere; they were encouraged along the way.

“The most pressing challenge is the lack of encouragement, particularly in funding for business owners. It’s difficult to succeed in a country like Nigeria, where there is limited government support.

“When a woman progresses, society progresses. We’re here to support and connect her network, which focuses on empowering, networking, and encouraging women to strive and rise in any situation.

“Regarding education, we already know its importance. In Nigeria, some parts of the country have lower educational levels due to family or financial constraints. Without education, we wouldn’t be discussing empowerment today.

“Education is the first step for a girl child. It empowers her from home, teaching her to know her rights and believe in herself.”

A broadcaster, Eugenia Abu, urged successful women to mentor and guide others, adding that support for one another was vital, which successful women have a crucial role in mentoring.

“As I reflect on the journey of women, I am reminded of the crucial role we play in shaping our world. As givers of life, we have a unique responsibility to showcase our talents, maintain hope, and strive for a better tomorrow.

“I urge my fellow women to stand up, pursue education, and push forward, knowing that our contributions have significantly impacted humanity.

“We must support one another, whether it’s a family member or a colleague. Successful women, such as governors’ wives and private sector leaders, have a vital role in mentoring and guiding us.

“I have faith that God supports us, and I encourage you to hold onto your faith. However, I also recognize that progress requires hard work and perseverance. Let’s work together, contributing our unique talents and strengths to uplift one another.”
