From Desmond Mgboh, Kano
Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, was the guest of the people of Benin Kingdom, where he attended the Igue Festival, last week. The monarch was accompanied by a delegation of traditional title holders from the Kano Emirate Council, led by Magayakin Kano and Magaji Galadima, Awaisu Abbas Sunusi and Isa Sunusi.
He was invited by the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, to the historic festival, celebrated once in 40 years. Bayero offered prayers for blessings, wellbeing and prosperity of the Benin monarchy and the people of the kingdom.
He urged the people to continue to embrace love, peace and to always pray for the good of the country. Press Secretary to the emir, Abubakar Balarabe Kofar Naisa, said: “It was the first time an emir from Northern Nigeria will be attending this traditional festival. The entire people of Benin Kingdom did not miss the fact as they welcomed us with lots of excitement and delightful cultural appreciation. And we are grateful.
“Celebrated between Christmas and New Year, the seven-day festival featured several aspects of the Benin culture and rich tradition, including the Oba’s blessing of the land and the people.
The Igue festival, also known as King’s festival, celebrates the origin in the Benin Kingdom. It was initiated in the 14th Century during the reign of Oba Ewuare who reigned in Benin between 1440 and 1473.
“The festival offers an opportunity to honour the memory of former Obas. During the Igue season, the Oba is prohibited from being in the presence of any non-native person.”
