President Bola Tinubu has showered encomium on the Nigerian media, saying the fight against military dictatorship in the past could not have been won without their efforts.
In his democracy speech to the nation on Wednesday, the President recalled how Nigerian journalists “mounted the barricades along with the pro-democracy activists” while celebrating their accomplishments in the nation.
Singling out a few of the most prominent news platforms, Tinubu stated that they were all proscribed and jailed for standing for free speech and civil liberties.

“We could not have won the battle against military dictatorship without the irrepressible Nigerian journalists who mounted the barricades along with the pro-democracy activists.
“We celebrate them today, along with their media establishments such as The Punch, Guardian, National Concord, Tribune, The News/Tempo, and TELL Magazines.
“Military authorities proscribed these media establishments and jailed their journalists for standing for free speech and civil liberties”, part of the statement reads.
