Baby dies, others injured as two-storey building collapses in Lagos

By Lukman Olabiyi

In a tragic incident yesterday, a baby was confirmed dead after a two-storey building collapsed at 12 Cameroun Street in the Ewenla area of Mushin, Lagos State.

The collapse occurred during heavy rainfall that hit the city in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to sources, several occupants of the building were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

A resident revealed that the baby succumbed to injuries at the hospital.

Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed that the collapsed building was newly constructed.

He stated that seven people, comprising three females and four males, were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

LASEMA’s rescue team has thoroughly searched the rubble and confirmed no other victims were trapped beneath the collapsed structure.

The agency attributed the collapse to the use of sub-standard materials in the construction, noting that the building fell onto an adjoining bungalow, affecting a total of seven adults.

The collapsed building has been marked for structural and integrity testing by the Lagos State Building Control Agency and the Lagos State Material Testing Laboratory.

As of the time of reporting, various responders, including LASEMA’s response team, LRU Fire unit, LASBCA, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASAMBUS, LNSC, FRSC, and the Nigeria Police Force, were present at the scene.
