By Gabriel Dike, Lagos
Academic and non-teaching in the nation’s tertiary institutions abandoned lectures and administrative activities to join the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) coordinated protest against fuel hike and other economic policies of the current administration.
Reports from the universities, polytechnics and colleges of education show that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) and Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) participated in the protest at Abuja and at state levels.
Some union branches staged the protest in front of their institutions carrying different placards with inscriptions condemning government decisions and actions.
Leaders of ASUU, SSANU, ASUP and COEASU confirmed the participation of members in the protest at Abuja and state levels.
Following the protest by academic and non-teaching workers in the tertiary institutions, academic and administrative activities were disrupted in various campuses.
