The Enugu State House Press Corps (SHPC) has commended the state governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, for his bold and transformative developmental initiatives across key sectors in the state.

The commendation came during a two-day capacity-building workshop themed, “Artificial intelligence utilisation for effective journalism,” in Enugu.

Speaking at the event, Chairman of the SHPC, Emmanuel Anule, praised Mbah’s achievements in education, infrastructure, security and economic development.

“We view training and continuous retraining as essential for enhancing both our individual skills and our collective ability to perform effectively on the job,” Anule said, while expressing gratitude to the governor for hosting the workshop.

Mbah, in his welcome address, emphasised the importance of the media in a democratic society, describing it as the conscience of the nation.

“The media is the conscience of the nation and artificial intelligence is not the next frontier; it is actually with us now and impacting our lives in ways we may not immediately discern,” the governor said.

He highlighted the role of artificial intelligence in modern journalism, noting that while it could enhance efficiency, it must not replace creativity and originality.

On some of his administration’s developmental strides, he cited the state’s investment in technology through the establishment of a Command and Control Centre that provides 24/7 surveillance of streets and neighbourhoods.

He also mentioned the ongoing Smart Schools project aimed at delivering experiential education and equipping students with real-world problem-solving skills.

Additionally, he spoke about the state’s effort to revamp its transport system, ensuring dignified and comfortable commuting for residents through the construction of well-paved roads.

The workshop brought together journalists covering the nation’s seat of power at Aso Rock, the Presidential Villa in Abuja, offering them fresh insights on the use of artificial intelligence in journalism and reinforcing the vital role of the media in governance.
