Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle has defended his decision to include 10 players from Nigeria’s domestic league—among them veteran Ahmed Musa—in his latest squad, saying it reflects a broader strategy to build a cohesive and competitive national team.
Speaking at a press conference at the Gtech Community Stadium in London, Chelle explained that the call-ups were not just symbolic but based on merit, observation, and tactical planning.
“We have a lot of players in Nigeria,” Chelle said. “We need to give them a chance to show their quality.”
Chelle, who recently scouted several matches in the Nigeria Premier Football League, stressed that his decisions are informed by first-hand analysis.
“I watched a few games in Nigeria. I spent time analyzing the players. This is my job. They have quality and they deserve a chance.”
He emphasised that the Unity Cup is an opportunity not just to test players, but also to experiment with systems ahead of key competitive fixtures in September.
“The Unity Cup is a great moment to try players and systems so we can be ready,” he said.
“We want to build a group, an identity. For that, we need players who can learn quickly and adapt to our game project.”
One of the most eye-catching names on the list is Ahmed Musa, the veteran of multiple Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup tournaments.
Chelle stood by the selection. “I think Ahmed is a great player. Every Nigerian knows that.
“He brings not only quality but experience. He has played many big games and can bring something valuable to the group.”
The coach added that while Musa must still earn his place on the pitch, his inclusion reflects the same expectations as any other player.
“He needs to take his chance and show us what he can do. If he plays well, that’s my job—to reward performance.”
Chelle concluded by reinforcing the importance of building a strong midfield, drawing comparisons to his time with the Malian national team.
