The Arewa Empowerment Coalition (AEC) has voiced strong reservations about the proposed formation of the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), a political coalition reportedly being championed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in collaboration with several prominent political figures, including Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, and Babachir Lawal.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the AEC, through its President, Sulaiman Yusuf Sani, described the emerging alliance as an initiative that may not align with the current political realities and expectations of Nigerians, particularly those in Northern Nigeria.
According to the coalition, the proposed ADA appears to reflect a misreading of the evolving political landscape. “We believe this coalition does not adequately reflect the aspirations of everyday Nigerians and may struggle to gain the support of the electorate,” Sani said.
The AEC emphasized the importance of building political movements that are grounded in the needs of citizens rather than driven by political calculations. It also expressed concern that the inclusion of some political figures with controversial public profiles could impact the credibility of the alliance.
“The Nigerian political environment today demands leadership that is responsive, transparent, and forward-thinking,” Sani stated. “We encourage those leading this initiative to reassess their strategy and focus on inclusive dialogue that truly captures the hopes and priorities of the people.”
The group further urged citizens to critically evaluate emerging political arrangements and support platforms that prioritize national unity, good governance, and meaningful reform.
While stopping short of endorsing any alternative movement, the AEC concluded by calling on all political leaders—regardless of affiliation—to put the interests of the people first and commit to a leadership approach rooted in integrity and accountability.
