Scores of anti – demolition protesters took over the streets of Kano Monday, to press for an end to the on- going demolition exercise embarked upon by the state government.
The demostrators, who carried placards conveying their grievances converged at Daula Hotel axis along Murtala Mohammed Way in the state capital.
Although the protest slowed down the flow of traffic on the busy business street. It was largely peaceful and orderly.
While some of the inscriptions on protesters’ placards read ” Governor Yusuf, you are chasing away investors ftom the commercial city ” others warned the governor against dislodging.the peaceful atmosphere in the state.
Speaking to the media, the spokesperson of the demonstrators, who converged under the umbrella ,” Coalition for Good Governance and Change Initiative”, Zaharadeen Sanii Baba lamented that the demolition exercise was a betrayal of the voters of the state.
Baba told journalists that despite their previous objections and appeals, the state government has marked out more buildings for demolition.
He tasked the governor to go after his predecessor who is still in Nigeria to settle their differences rather than engage in actions that undermine the investments of innocent residents of the state.
He also charged him to focus on good governonce and not vandals nsisting that the properties that were being destroyed do not belong to the former governor.
He implored the administration to unveil a plan to compensate the victims of the demolition Including the families who lost their beloved relatives on account of the exercise.
