For members of Great Friends (G-Friends) Thrift Society, Lagos, it is an annual ritual or, better still, a way of life. Every year, they visit vulnerable people in society and shower them with love.
In their usual manner, on December 7, 2024, they were at the Center for Destitute Empowerment International in Idimu, Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, where they gave cash, materials and food items, among others.

Speaking at the occasion, the chairman of G-Friends, Mazi Cyril Okemuo, said: “It is a great honour to be here with you today. I am filled with a sense of compassion and hope as I stand before you.
“Center for Destitute Empowerment International is not just a place of refuge, but a sanctuary where lives are rebuilt and dreams are rekindled. And that is why G-Friends Thrift Society chose to identify with you.
“Thank you for your unwavering commitment and kindness to the dedicated staff and volunteers. Your tireless efforts ensure everyone here receives the care, support, and respect they deserve. You are the true heroes, and your work is truly inspiring. And we trust that you would put to good use, the items and other materials brought here today.
“To the residents, you are the heart and soul of this home. Each one of you has a unique story, filled with challenges and triumphs. Remember that you are valued, loved, and capable of achieving great things. The world is full of opportunities, and with determination and hard work, you can overcome any obstacle.
“Today, G-Friends Thrift Society celebrate with you, not just the end of a year, but the beginning of new possibilities. Let us continue to support and uplift one another, to create a community where everyone feels safe, loved, and empowered.
“Thank you, and may we all continue to be a source of light and love for one another.”
Co-founder of the Centre, Mrs Alice Okoliko, thanked G-Friends for coming to their assistance, particularly at this time when the country is witnessing serious hardship. She promised to put to judicious use all the items donated by G-Friends.
The founder of the benevolence arm of G-Friends, Chief Henry Umahi, said the organization cherishes to identify with soul-lifting endeavours. He said the organization will continue to render help to less privileged people in the society within its resources.
A week earlier, on November 30, to be precise, G-Friends elected new executives to pilot its affairs. While some were returned unopposed, some new ones came on board.
In his acceptance speech, Okemuo said: “I stand before you today with immense gratitude and humility, deeply honored by your trust and confidence in me once again. This victory is not just mine, but ours – a testament to the collective effort, dedication, and unwavering belief in our shared vision for a better future.
“Throughout this outgoing term/year, we have faced challenges and obstacles, but we have overcome them together with determination and resilience. Your support has been the driving force behind our success, and I am profoundly grateful for each one of you who stood by me.
“I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to my family, friends, and executive committee for their tireless efforts and unwavering support.
“As we move forward, I am committed to working tirelessly to fulfill the promises we have made. Together, we will continue to strive for progress, justice, and equality. We will work to create opportunities for all, to build a community where everyone can thrive, and to ensure that our future is bright and prosperous.
“This re-election is a reminder that when we come together, there is nothing we cannot achieve. Let us continue to work hand in hand, with hope in our hearts and determination in our actions, to build the future we envision.
Thank you for your trust, your support, and your belief in our shared vision. Together, we will make a difference. Thank you, and let’s get to work.”
