The traditional mouthpiece of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South-West Council, Chief McDonald Igbadiwei, has said that beyond the fun fare associated with the Amaseikumor festival, the event is also designed to foster unity among various ethnic nationalities in the Niger Delta.
He disclosed that the seven-day event is meant to create an enabling environment for the various ethnic groups, especially the Ijaw nation to embrace peaceful co-existence with their neighbours for the common good of all indigenes irrespective of cultural, ethnic or political affiliations:
“Though the festival is sacred, it is not secret. There are no human sacrifices but cows, rams, food and drinks used to appease the gods. Amaseikumor is not only holy, but the celebration of life, love and continuity.”
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace, Chief Festus Keyamo, said the festival represents the celebration of one of the best cultures and traditions of Niger Delta people: “Everything must be done to promote African culture because it is the identity of our people.
“The festival represents the celebration of one of the best cultures and traditions of the Niger Delta. We must do everything to promote this. It is our identity as a people.”
He congratulated Chairman, Tantita Security Services (TSSL), Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, aka Tompolo, for his commitment in ensuring the hosting of the feast: “The event through his efforts is attracting global reception.”
The feast further globalised African cultures and traditions being televised on major international platforms that promote the African ways of life, traditions, cultures and values.
The festival featured procession, dances in honour and worship of the sea goddess, free medical treatment, all courtesy of Chief Matthew Tonlagha Foundation and supported by Kestin Pondi, Managing Director, Tantita, in addition to prayers for the well-being of the people.
Celebrants included Oboro-Gbaraun II, Atelekpe Agadagba, Pere of Gbaramatu Kingdom and Tompolo. Others were Chief Dennis Otuaro, Administrator, Presidential Amnesty Programme, a musician, Davido, Obi Cubana, Kanayo Kanayo, White Money, members of National Assembly and traditional rulers.
Amaseikumor, which created avenue for food vendors to do brisk business started on Saturday, April 19 and ended on Friday, April 25, 2025 with enthusiasm.
