Telecom operators under the aegis of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) have expressed their support for the Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA)’s commencement of the enumeration of communication towers and masts across the state.
In a statement released on Tuesday, 28th January, 2025, ALTON emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that it will address public safety concerns raised by the Lagos State Government regarding abandoned communication towers.
“This project is vital for addressing public safety concerns raised by the Lagos State Government regarding abandoned communication towers and will deliver significant benefits to our industry and the broader public,” the statement read.
The Lagos City Mast and Tower Enumeration Project aims to create a comprehensive database of all communication towers within the state.
“While many towers are owned by non-telecommunication entities, such as broadcasting companies, government agencies, and private security firms, there is often a public misconception that all towers belong to network operators,” the statement clarified.
The enumeration will help identify and categorize towers, enabling better regulatory oversight and improved infrastructure management. This initiative, endorsed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), demonstrates ALTON’s commitment to self-regulation and public safety.
“By maintaining a robust and secure infrastructure in Lagos State and across the nation, we will strengthen industry-led solutions, enhance our reputation, and foster stronger relationships with regulators and stakeholders,” the statement continued.
ALTON called on all stakeholders to support this exercise, emphasizing its importance for public safety and well-being. “We remain committed to working with Lagos State Government through LASIMRA and all relevant stakeholders to achieve these goals,” the statement concluded.
