In a decisive move to restore peace and security in Benue State, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, convened a high-level meeting with the traditional rulers of the state — the Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty Orchivirigh Prof James Ayatse, and the Och’Idoma, His Royal Majesty Agabaidu Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John, on Saturday, June 21.
The meeting was part of ongoing efforts following President Bola Tinubu’s directive during his visit to urgently establish a strategic peace committee to tackle the root causes of violence in the region.
Akume described the recent violent incidents in Benue as “heartbreaking” and emphasised the President’s firm commitment to ending the senseless killings in the state, often referred to as the nation’s food basket, and across Nigeria.
“We want to appeal to you to continue to stay vigilant so that miscreants do not infiltrate the communities. Whenever you observe a breach, do not hesitate to inform us. The President will never disappoint you,” Akume urged the traditional leaders.
Highlighting the critical role of traditional institutions in peacebuilding, the SGF noted that including the Tor Tiv and Och’Idoma in the peace process reflects the Tinubu administration’s recognition of their influence in conflict resolution and community dialogue.
Both monarchs expressed their gratitude to President Tinubu for his hands-on approach and assured the Federal Government of their unwavering support for the peace efforts. They also appealed to all Benue communities to embrace peace and cooperate fully with the forthcoming peace committee.
The peace committee, led by Akume, has already begun consultations with the mandate to propose actionable solutions to end the ongoing attacks and foster lasting reconciliation and stability in Benue State, according to a statement by Director, Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen.
