Afenifere warns against GMO seeds

Urges comprehensive government scrutiny

By Damiete Braide, Lagos

The pan-Nigerian social welfare group, Afenifere, has expressed strong concerns regarding the use of genetically modified organism (GMO) seeds in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

In a media release signed by National Publicity Secretary Justice Faloye, Afenifere urged the federal government to scrutinise the long-term effects of GMOs on Nigerian consumers and the country’s agricultural sustainability.

The group commended the recent intervention by the lower chamber of the National Assembly, particularly a bill introduced by Hon Muktar Shagaya, which calls for a suspension of all GMO introductions until a thorough investigation by the House Committee on Agricultural Production and Services is completed and its findings published.

Afenifere highlighted several issues, including the permanent dependency of farmers on patented GMO seeds, the potential health risks associated with pesticide use on GMO crops, and the ethical concerns of patenting life. They called for comprehensive studies on the health implications of pesticide exposure and stronger regulatory structures to ensure the long-term sustainability of Nigeria’s agriculture. The group also emphasised the need for transparency and public access to research findings on GMOs.

The organisation concluded by demanding the removal of all copyrights from foreign GMO seed sellers in Nigeria and the mandatory labelling of GMO foods. They also urged the government to establish a robust and incorruptible framework to protect the country’s agricultural future and ensure the freedom of choice for farmers and consumers.
