A high-level delegation from the Australian Defence Force (ADF), has arrive Nigeria to inspect the Nigerian Navy Landing Tank Ship, NNS KADA, and adopt the design for their fleet renewal programme.
Brigadier General Bassett, Director General of Platforms of the Australian Defence Force who led the delegation to Western Naval Command Headquarters in Lagos informed the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Rear Admiral Mike Oamen, that the delegation was in Nigeria to inspect NNS KADA, which is regarded as one of the best-designed Landing Ship Tanks (LSTs) globally.
He explained that the Australian Defense Force is undergoing fleet renewal as part of its ongoing reforms, and in their research, NNS KADA emerged as the top option for capability and operational requirements.

In response, Rear Admiral MG Oamen welcomed the delegation and expressed appreciation for Australia’s interest in NNS KADA. He emphasized the strategic importance of the vessel to the Nigerian Navy, highlighting its role in projecting naval power, securing vital sea lanes, and supporting maritime commerce in the Gulf of Guinea.
The FOC West also conveyed the greetings of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, to the visiting delegation.
Following the discussions, the Australian delegation embarked on a comprehensive tour of NNS KADA, guided by the Commanding Officer, Captain Andrew Zidon.
The visit underscored the growing bilateral defence cooperation between Nigeria and Australia, particularly in naval technology and fleet development.
The NNS KADA, an LST with the capacity to carry over 250 passengers including 32 crew members and 16 embarked Special Forces.
NNS KADA is designed for a range of duties including amphibious operations, strategic transport of equipment and troops, disaster relief, medical evacuation and humanitarian assistance.
Landing Ship Tank (LST-100) acquired by the Nigerian Navy, built by Damen Shipyards in the UAE, and designed for amphibious operations, transport, and logistics, as well as maritime security and humanitarian aid.
The Kada replaces NNS Offiom and NNS Ambe which were built in Germany and delivered to the Nigerian Navy in the early 1980s, serving the country meritoriously.
