…says she creates befitting designs that make clients feel comfortable
Mrs. Oyebola Alabi is the Creative Director of Sewrite fashion House, in Minna, Niger State. Though, she is a graduate of Business Administration, she has chosen fashion designing as a profession for several years now after completing both formal and informal training in the trade.
In a chat with newsmen during an exhibition in Minna recently, she spoke about her inspiration in fashion design, what she does in designing and how government could assist the industry to thrive in the face of myriad of challenges facing the fashion designers in the country.
What kind of designs do you make, ma?
Mrs. Alabi: I do Bestspoke and ready to wear.
When did you start fashion designing?
Mrs. Alabi: Since 2017. The motivation to start a fashion business stems from both personal interests and changing some narratives.
What is unique about your style?
My designs focus on creating designs that empower individuals and promote self-confidence, and I achieve these by using inclusive and body-positive designs, they aim to inspire people to feel comfortable and confident in their own skin.
How do you use your trade as fashion designer to mentor the younger ones?
Yes, by participating in empowerment scheme organized by some non profitable organizations, like skill acquisition programmes and others.
What challenges do you face in the Nigerian fashion industry?
As a Fashion designers in Nigeria we are facing various challenges, including issues with infrastructure, limited access to quality materials, and the need to navigate a competitive market. Additionally, issues like piracy, inconsistent power supply among others are there.
In what ways would you advise government on the need to assist the industry to grow?
The government can support the Nigerian fashion industry by implementing policies and initiatives that address key challenges. This may include, Infrastructure Development, Access to Finance, Education and Training, Intellectual Property Protection, Promotion of Local Textiles, Fashion Events and Platforms, and Research and Development.
By addressing these aspects, the government can create an environment conducive to the growth and sustainability of the Nigerian fashion industry.
