The Nigerian Navy Officers Wives Association (NOWA) held a fitness health walk on Saturday at the Naval Unit Parade Ground in Abuja for wives of officers and ratings. The event aimed to boost mental and physical health, raise awareness, build community, and promote an active lifestyle.

NOWA President Mrs Ijeoma Ogalla, represented by her deputy, Mrs Zainab Bassey, commended the large turnout, stating, “It goes a long way to show to prioritize their health and embrace an active lifestyle.” She highlighted walking’s benefits, saying, “Walking is one of the simplest but yet most powerful forms of physical activity. It improves cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles and bones, supports joint health, reduces stress, and boosts mood.”

Ogalla cited studies showing that 30 minutes of daily brisk walking can reduce risks of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. She added, “But this walk isn’t just about physical fitness. It’s about holistic well-being. Let’s walk together—not just for ourselves, but for the message we send: that health is a priority. Regular walking supports mental health, improves sleep, and helps manage anxiety and depression.”

The event also fostered community, with Ogalla noting, “Today, we are walking for our health—but also to raise awareness, build community, and promote a culture where movement is part of everyday life.” She emphasised its impact, stating, “As we all gathered here today for this fitness health walk, I am assuring you that your presence matters to us. It sets an example and shows that small and consistent steps can lead to long-term change.”

Ogalla encouraged ongoing activity, saying, “We walk today not only for physical fitness, but for mental clarity, stress relief, and connection with our environment, with our neighbors, and with ourselves. Let today be a reminder that even simple steps can lead to lasting change.” She praised the accessibility of walking, describing it as “one of the best ways to stay active without needing special equipment or a gym membership.”
