The Abia State Government has announced plans to introduce CNG-powered buses in the state. This initiative aims to maintain the positive impact of extended business hours in Aba and Umuahia, following the planned restriction on tricycle (Keke) and motorcycle (Okada) operations.
The government has also extended the enforcement date for the Keke and Okada restrictions from 1 July to 1 August 2024.
Okey Kanu, Commissioner for Information and Culture, disclosed these developments in Umuahia. He explained that the CNG buses would address potential transportation gaps resulting from the Keke restrictions.
“Keke and Okada operators will be encouraged to form cooperatives or clusters to access these buses,” Kanu stated. “The goal is to ensure commuters can still move around easily, especially during the restriction period.”

Regarding the enforcement postponement, Kanu explained it was in response to public feedback.
“As a responsive government, we have listened to the pleas of Abians through various channels. We decided to extend the enforcement by one month to allow all stakeholders to prepare adequately,” he said.
He added that preparatory steps, including the enumeration and registration of all commercial vehicles, tricycles, and motorcycles, began on 1 July.
Ferdinand Ekeoma, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, addressed concerns about congestion around the Cooperative and Isigate axis of Umuahia. He stated that the government is committed to resolving the issue and relocating traders in those areas.
“We are committed to due process,” Ekeoma asserted. “Plans are finalised to relocate those at Isigate, but we are also aware of the potential economic impact. A strategic location for relocation is being acquired. The same approach will be applied to the Cooperative area.”
