The kidnappers who abducted the Caretaker Chairman of Ukum Local Government Area of Benue state, Rev. Gideon Haanongo, have reportedly demanded the sum of N50 million as ransom before he can be released.
A reliable source who preferred not to be named disclosed this to newsmen in Makurdi, on Tuesday.
The Sun had reported that Rev. Haanongo was kidnapped early hours of Saturday, January 13, 2024, around Anyagba, Tongov Katsina-Ala local government area on his way to attend the funeral of Ter Katsina-Ala, Chief Benjamin Wombo.
He was abducted alongside his Special Assistant on Administration, Mr. Silas Yuhwam, his driver and police orderly.
During the burial, the state Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia had appealed to the abductors to release the chairman and turn a new leaf as he was ready to pardon them, rehabilitation and reintegrate them back to the society.
But the source said the abductors rather made demands which he described as outrageous.
Speaking on the matter, the State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Orientation, Hon. Matthew Abo, confirmed hearing that the abductors had made demands from the family of their victim but could not verify the amount.
He said, “I heard that the kidnappers are demanding certain amount of money though I cannot authenticate the veracity of the rumour.
“I cannot state categorically but the state government has mobilized security operatives who are working hard to rescue the chairman”.
