Concerns surrounding gender selection often revolve around fears of skewing the sex ratio in society. However, gender selection expert Amaka Didiugwu, founder of PAAM Clinic, challenges these myths, citing studies that show minimal impact on sex ratios in countries where the practice is legal and accessible.

According to Didiugwu, “The myths surrounding this practice are contradictory because the conventional method of gender selection explains that when the woman’s egg is ruptured and waiting to be fertilized, the man releases the X and Y chromosome, and biologically the Y chromosome swims faster than the X chromosome, so automatically the couple involved should be having a boy all things being equal, but at the end of the day you see couples who tried perfectly but have girls, or in the other hand people who are trying for girls, will avoid the peak of their cycle just so they can eliminate the Y chromosome, as it dies out faster than the X chromosome but they end up with twin boys instead. But with this procedure none of that will be done as what determines the gender is the cycle the woman is trying in and not just the day of her cycle.”

Looking ahead, Didiugwu foresees gender selection practices evolving to address related challenges. “I believe in the near future that this procedure will take over and solve gender selection related problems in most homes,” she asserts. “People will no longer need to go through IVF or IUI just to have a boy or girl, and our population ratio will be balanced as well.”

Reflecting on her work, Didiugwu shares the touching story of Mrs. Gift, whose journey exemplifies the transformative impact of gender selection.

“Every success story is significant, but Mrs. Gift’s journey stands out,” Didiugwu recounts. “After six sons, Mrs. Gift approached me with a fervent desire for a daughter. Through our consultations, she conceived and eagerly confirmed the gender through NIPT, resulting in joyous news of expecting a girl. This experience not only bonded us but also exemplified the transformative power of gender selection in fulfilling long-held aspirations.”
