A major Crisis is currently brewing at the Lagos State University (LASU) over plan by the university management to de-harmonized teachers in the staff school who are members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).
The battle line has been drawn as SSANU at a meeting with LASU Vice Chancellor, Prof ‘Lanre Fagbohun’ on the issue, rejected de-harmonization policy which the union said would reduce the salary of the teachers from N120, 000 to N60, 000 as well as their employment status.
SSANU chairman, Saheed Oseni said that at the meeting, the association told the VC to shelve the idea of implementing the state government directive on staff school teachers.
His words: ‘’The university management invited SSANU and NASU on the issue. We told the VC that we are opposed to the policy of the state government directive and that we will resist the implementation.
Oseni said the first letter from the state government on the issue was on November 2015 and the second one came on March 4, 2016 and that if the bad policy is implemented, over 40 teachers and several families would be affected.
The union leader explained that the state government directive to the management was to de-harmonise the staff school teachers which meant they are no longer staff of the university and also a reduction of their salary.
‘’There is relative peace on campus and we want to maintain the status quo. If the policy is allowed, it will affect many families. If the decision is allowed, the teachers will earn lower salary and also it will affect their employment status.’’
