The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has issued a stern warning to boat operators and passengers in Cross River State urging them to comply with safety regulations.
During a routine sensitization campaign, the agency emphasized that boat operators must prioritize passenger safety and adhere to regulations to avoid arrest and prosecution.
NIWA’s Managing Director, Asiwaju Bola Oyebamiji (FCIB) conveyed this message through the agency’s Calabar Area Manager, Engr. Stanley Onuoha, during a sensitization event at Ifiang Ayong and Ikang waterfronts in Cross River State.
Onuoha explained that the agency chose these locations because boat operators and passengers are less likely to attend formal meetings, making direct engagement essential.
“We’re committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property on the waterway. Anyone found violating these rules will be prosecuted.
“Life has no duplicate and everyone must practice safety guidelines. You must behave responsibly because your life matters”, he said.
Furthermore, he said the authority will strictly enforce the Transportation Code 2023 which contains key regulations including wearing life jackets, avoiding night travels, refraining from overloading, maintaining safe speed and filling out passenger manifests.
The sensitization program is part of NIWA’s ongoing efforts to curb boat mishaps and promote safe water transportation. Notably, the agency is also partnering with the Nigeria Police, Nigerian Navy, Maritime Police, and its own NIWA Police to enforce safety regulations more effectively.
The Village Head of Ifiang Ayong Oliver Effiong, Akpabuyo Council officials and representatives of marine unions in the areas welcomed the sensitization exercise and pledged to adhere to the guidelines.
The sensitization which marks an important step towards promoting water transportation safety in the state also featured the presentation of free life jackets and a demonstration on how to use them by NIWA officials.
