The Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN) has congratulated the Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of The Sun Publishing Limited, Mr. Onuoha Ukeh, on his emergence as the General Secretary of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE).
In a letter signed by its Executive Secretary, Feyi Smith, NPAN commended Ukeh’s victory at the recently concluded Biennial National Convention of the NGE held at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, describing it as a testament to the confidence reposed in him by his colleagues.
The letter reads in part: “We write to rejoice with you and also congratulate you on your recent election as General Secretary of the elite group of Nigerian media practitioners, the Nigerian Guild of Editors,” the letter read in part.
“The overwhelming votes garnered by you in the hotly contested election referenced the implicit confidence your colleagues have in your capacity to provide necessary support and direction as the engine room of this elite class of journalism professionals in our great country.”
NPAN further expressed its readiness to collaborate with the leadership of the NGE to promote professionalism and ethics in journalism.
Ukeh scored 218 votes to defeat Wole Sogunle and Dr. Qasim Akinreti who polled 45 and 30 votes, respectively.
Also at the convention, the incumbent president of the Guild, Eze Anaba, was re-elected while the immediate past general secretary, Iyobosa Uwugiaren, emerged as the new Treasurer.
