The Group Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of Champion Newspapers Ltd, Dr. Nwadiuto Iheakanwa, has called on Nigerian governments to prioritise agriculture as a cornerstone of national development and a safeguard against dependence on foreign policies.
She made the call during her keynote address at the annual Champion Newspaper Awards held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, to honour 41 Nigerians for their excellence in diverse fields.
Dr. Iheakanwa emphasised that a country unable to feed its citizens is vulnerable to the pressures and influence of foreign nations.
“A nation which cannot feed her citizens exposes her people to the vagaries and dictates of foreign policies. Hence, we strongly recommend more dedicated attention to both mechanised and peasant farming.”
She noted that while agriculture is often viewed as a rural or subsistence endeavour, it has now become an urgent national priority that can guarantee economic resilience, create jobs, reduce hunger, and minimize dependence on imported food.
The media executive praised the awardees, describing them as symbols of hope and hard work. “This is the best time of the year to honour those who give us the pride to say we are true Nigerians. Through hard work, resilience, and honesty, they have become champions in their fields.”
On the essence of the award, Dr. Iheakanwa explained that it goes far beyond glamour and social connections. “The whole essence of the awards is not just the razzmatazz and relationship building, but its intrinsic status as a symbol of appreciation and a challenge for more honest contributions and commitments to nation-building. In acknowledging the selfless efforts and dedication of individuals, institutions, organizations, and government agencies, heroes are made, and role models are shaped,” she said.
The event was marked by rich cultural displays, including performances from Igbo traditional dancers who entertained guests from the entrance of the venue to the inner hall, creating a festive and authentically Nigerian atmosphere.
