In a strategic effort to foster rural empowerment and boost agricultural productivity, Senator Aniekan Bassey of Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District has rolled out a capacity development training programme focused on oil palm farming for grassroots leaders across his district.
The two-day training, which took place at the Aniekan Bassey Senatorial District Secretariat, attracted participants from all local government areas within the district. The initiative aims to reposition oil palm farming as a critical pathway to economic diversification, job creation, and food security in Akwa Ibom State.
Declaring the training open, the Chairman of Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, Hon. Edidiong Inyang, described the programme as a targeted intervention for grassroots coordinators. He stressed the importance of oil palm in Nigeria’s agro-economy and commended Senator Bassey for investing in a long-term solution to unemployment and underdevelopment.
“This is not just training; it’s an empowerment model that includes the entire oil palm value chain—from cultivation to processing and marketing,” Hon. Inyang stated. “It’s designed to equip our people with practical knowledge and economic tools they can immediately put to use.”
The Director General of Team Aniekan Bassey, Obong Godwin Awah, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that the programme aligns with both state and federal government priorities on agricultural development. He explained that increased palm oil production will reduce import dependence, stabilize local prices, and serve as a foundation for agro-allied industries.
“Senator Bassey understands that real development happens when people are empowered with knowledge and resources to create value,” Obong Awah remarked. “His focus on the entire agricultural chain ensures that our constituents are not only producers but also entrepreneurs and industrial partners.”
Director of the programme, Hon. Desmond Etim, provided more insight into the empowerment package, revealing that each participant will receive start-up capital and palm seedlings. He noted that this provision is to ensure immediate application of the knowledge gained, transforming training into action.
“This is a deliberate effort that complements Governor Umo Eno’s A.R.I.S.E. Agenda, which promotes agricultural development and rural inclusion,” Etim added.
During the practical session, Mr. Ernest Awakessien of the Ministry of Agriculture walked participants through best practices in oil palm cultivation and post-harvest handling. He highlighted the role of modern farming techniques in boosting productivity and creating value-added products for local and international markets.
As participants concluded the training with renewed enthusiasm and practical tools for success, the programme has been widely seen as a model for meaningful empowerment—one that not only addresses economic challenges but also builds a sustainable future for communities across Akwa Ibom North-East.
Senator Aniekan Bassey continues to receive commendation for his proactive leadership and enduring commitment to the socio-economic advancement of his constituents through strategic, agriculture-led interventions.
