A Kano Upper Sharia Court has sentenced Shafiu Abubakar to death by hanging for complicity in the attack on a Mosque, which led to the death of 23 worshipers.
Abubakar, 38, was convicted on four count charge of culpable homicide, attempted murder, causing grievous hurt and mischief by fire.
A breakdown of his charges and convictions, showed that he was sentenced to death for culpable homicide, 100 lashes for attempted murder, additional 50 lashes for causing grievous hurt and N1,500 for mischief by fire.
The Presiding judge, Halhalatu Khuza’i Zakarriyya, also ordered the Kano State government to confiscate and sell his tricycle, directing that the proceed be added to the resources for reconstruction of the destroyed Mosque.
Shafiu arraignment was sequel to the tragic incident of May 15, 2024, in Gadan Larabar Abasawa Village, Gezawa LG, Kano state.
According to the prosecution, Shafiu Abubakar had entered the Mosque during the early morning prayers, poured petrol inside, and set it on fire, while the worshippers were praying.
The attack, he told the Sharia court, resulted in the death of 23 worshippers and injured many others
The judge granted the convict a 30-day window to file an appeal.
