Residents along the border of Gwer East and Konshisha Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Benue State have fled their homes following a renewed communal clash that led to the burning of numerous houses.
The conflict, which erupted last weekend, marks another episode in a long-standing feud between communities in the two LGAs.
A source from Mbaiase in Masev, Gwer East LGA, alleged that the violence began on Saturday, May 10, 2025, when Mbaiase launched a surprise attack on Gbinde in Mbagusa, Mbatser, Shangev-Tiev, Konshisha LGA, describing it as a reprisal for prior disputes. The source claimed the communities have clashed repeatedly over the past three months due to historical tensions.
Terhide Fave, media aide to Konshisha LGA Chairman Terfa Moses Chikyaa, confirmed the attack occurred on Saturday evening, resulting in significant property damage. “Residents have fled the area. Many houses were burnt, but I can’t ascertain the numbers now,” Fave said, noting no lives were lost but many families are now homeless.
Fave added that Chairman Chikyaa visited the affected areas on Sunday, May 11, condemned the attack, and urged residents to remain calm and avoid retaliatory violence. The chairman assured that the state government would pursue justice and advised against taking the law into their own hands.
Efforts to reach Benue State Police spokesperson CSP Catherine Anene for confirmation were unsuccessful, as she did not respond to calls or messages.
