The Edo State government, led by Governor Monday Okpebholo, joined the global community to celebrate World Press Freedom Day. The government praised the vital role of a free and independent press in promoting democracy, accountability, and societal progress.

In a statement signed by Fred Itua, the governor’s press secretary, the government said Okpebholo strongly supports a vibrant and free media as a cornerstone of a healthy society.

“Journalists, as the watchdogs of truth and the voice of the voiceless, play a crucial role in holding those in power accountable on critical issues and empowering citizens with the information they need to make informed decisions,” the statement read.

The governor commended the courage and dedication of journalists in Edo State and worldwide. He noted that many work in challenging conditions to deliver vital information to the public. “Their commitment to the principles of accuracy, fairness, and ethical reporting is essential for maintaining public trust and strengthening the fabric of our communities,” the statement added.

The Edo state government pledged to uphold constitutional rights that protect press freedom and expression. “Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the constitutional rights that guarantee freedom of the press and expression,” the statement said. It emphasised that a free press is a fundamental pillar of democracy, and Okpebholo vowed to foster an environment where journalists can work without fear or interference.

The statement also addressed the challenges of misinformation and disinformation in today’s media landscape. Okpebholo urged journalists to maintain high standards of professionalism and ethical conduct to promote an informed public.

The government expressed appreciation for its partnership with the media in building a better Edo state.

“The Edo state government values the partnership with the media in our collective pursuit of a better Edo state. Governor Monday Okpebholo recognises the vital role the press plays in amplifying the voices of our people, scrutinising government policies, and contributing to constructive dialogues,” the statement said.

The governor remains open to working with media professionals in a spirit of transparency and mutual respect.
