The Benue State government has launched a sensitisation walk in Makurdi to promote the upcoming measles-rubella vaccination campaign, set for October.

Hon. Scholastica Ben-Sor, Special Adviser to Governor Hyacinth Alia on Women Affairs and campaign coordinator, stressed the need to counter myths and misinformation about the vaccine to protect mothers and children.

Ben-Sor spoke on Governor Alia’s commitment to competence, equity, and compassion, expressing confidence in the campaign’s success. She said advocacy efforts will cover all 23 local government areas (LGAs), supported by council chairmen, their spouses, radio and TV jingles, the State Primary Healthcare Board, and development partners.

With 277 functional healthcare facilities, Ben-Sor is optimistic about achieving widespread vaccine coverage, targeting grassroots communities.

Mrs Grace Wende, Executive Secretary of the State Primary Healthcare Board, assured the public of the vaccine’s safety and ongoing preparations for distribution. She noted that facilities are being rehabilitated, traditional rulers and community leaders will aid mobilisation, and healthcare workers will be trained.

Dr Patience Okpeh (Medical Women Association of Nigeria, Benue Chapter), Mrs Helen Agaigbe (Benue APC Women Leader), and Dr Gift Izenyi (Measles-Rubella Representative) urged residents to embrace the free vaccines, commending Alia’s administration.

The walk, from Savannah Roundabout to Government House Roundabout, drew stakeholders, including the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Benue Chapter.
