The Archbishop of Lagos, Alfred Adewale Martins, has expressed concern over the spate of insecurity in most parts of the country, especially in Plateau and Benue states.
He advocated the establishment of State police which could pay attention to local security issues.
He decried the rate of criminals attacking people in their homelands, killing residents, razing houses, vandalising property and effectively displacing them from their homelands.
“It’s been such a distressing past few weeks in particular. It’s been there all the while, but these last few weeks have been distressing, particularly in Plateau and Benue states. It’s been a real cause of concern for many people. You wonder what exactly is going on when people are being dislodged in their homestead. It’s like the kind of dislodgement that looks like we want to take over their places”.
Archbishop Martins stated this during this year’s Chrism Mass at the Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos.
He noted the need for prayers for the Lord’s intervention, adding that over the years, these challenges have been there, and people have been disappointed and are resorting to self help, passing a vote of no confidence in the abilities of our leaders to protect them.
“Whatever the challenges are with state police, I am sure, there would be a way of overcoming them. It will help us have a way to rescue our nation from this chaos that is arising on a daily basis”, the Archbishop said.
