A major tragedy was averted on Sunday when a 33,000-litre fuel tanker collided with a tipper at Ugwu Onyeama axis of Enugu-Onitsha Expressway in Enugu State.
The accident occurred as the tanker was descending from the Ninth Mile end of the road, while the tipper was ascending from the Enugu end, both navigating a single lane.
Despite the severity of the crash, six occupants of the vehicles escaped unhurt, with only one person sustaining minor injuries.
The injured victim was taken to the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Parklane, for treatment.
Confirming the incident,Enugu State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Franklin Agbakoba, said emergency responders quickly secured the scene to prevent a possible fire outbreak.
“Our officers cordoned off the area and diverted traffic to the other lane. Firefighters were also on standby. We also prevented people from attempting to scoop fuel from the tanker. We’re currently waiting for another tanker to transload the product,” Agbakoba said.
As of press time, the road remains partially closed to traffic.
