From Shafa’atu Suleiman, Sokoto
Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State, Muhammad Bello Goronyo, has refuted the Federal Government’s claims of improved safety across the country, arguing that the situation in Sokoto State remains dire.
“Killings and kidnappings occur daily, and there’s no effective response from the government. Security is a constitutional responsibility, and they are failing in that duty,” he declared.
Despite the challenges facing the party, both internally and externally, Goronyo expressed optimism about the PDP’s prospects in the next general elections.
He reaffirmed the party’s resolve to reclaim political power both in the state and at the national level ahead of the 2027 general elections
“We are not sitting idle. We are actively sensitising our members and intensifying our strategic planning. By the grace of God, the PDP will deliver in 2027, in Sokoto and across Nigeria,” he said
Goronyo spoke during a quarterly strategic meeting held at the PDP State Secretariat, where both current and former executive members of the party convened to review the party’s performance and map out future strategies.
“This is our quarterly meeting involving all state executives, zonal representatives, and local government party leaders, “It is part of our ongoing effort to evaluate our progress and realign our strategies moving forward.”
Addressing recent speculations regarding possible political realignments and party mergers ahead of the 2027 polls, Goronyo dismissed any claims that the PDP is planning to rebrand or merge with other political entities.
“The PDP remains the last man standing among the five political parties registered in 1998. It is a grassroots movement and will continue to operate under its current identity,” he affirmed.
Goronyo also knocked the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration in Sokoto State, accusing it of poor governance and mismanagement.
“Since we left office, governance in Sokoto has taken a step backward. This administration is anti-people and anti-progress. From demolishing small businesses to failing to generate employment, their policies have only worsened the living conditions of the people,” he said.
He further criticized the financial management of local governments, alleging a lack of development and financial accountability.
“In the past two years, there have been no significant projects in any of the 23 local governments. They claim to be saving funds but struggle to pay salaries when allocations are delayed. The local governments are broke,” he stated.
