The Hungarian Secretary of State, Dr. Tristan Azbej has commissioned a six-floor edifice donated to the College of Nursing Sciences, St. Charles Borromeo Specialist Hospital in the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha.
On the delegation during the visit were Dr. Lóránd Endreffy, Hungarian Ambassador to Nigeria and Kristóf Kőrősi, Deputy Head of Mission at the Hungarian Embassy.
Azbej, who spoke during the commissioning project in Onitsha, disclosed that the magnificent structure is a gift from the Hungarian Government, through the Hungarian Helps Agency, aimed at empowering healthcare, education and uplifting the lives of the less privileged.
He disclosed that it was Dr. Reka Fodor, a Hungarian who came to Nigeria on a missionary work that brought their attention to the needs of the college and they decided to support the project.
He expressed his deep respect for Onitsha’s rich traditions and commitment to progress noting that Hungary’s support goes beyond financial assistance but of solidarity and mutual relationship. He expressed gratitude for the warmth welcome accorded to him and his entourage.
Speaking with reporters, Archbishop Valerian Okeke, who is also the proprietor of the college, praised God and Hungarians for their magnanimity. He also expressed deep gratitude to the Hungarian delegation emphasising that their contributions would leave a lasting impact on education, healthcare, and humanitarian efforts in the archdiocese and beyond.
The Nursing College administrator, Rev. Fr. Fidelis Nwanze, described the development as a prayer answered, noting that the college in its quest for a holistic formation for self-reliance for the students had been given the wings to fly higher.
Earlier, the delegation was received at the palace of the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe after meeting with Professor Charles Soludo at the Governor’s lodge, Awka.
Obi Achebe while welcoming the delegation, expressed enthusiasm on the visit, describing Onitsha as peace-loving and home of first Nigerian President, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and other prominent persons in Nigeria.
He praised the Hungarian team in a special way for assisting the Catholic Church in erecting an edifice for the students of College of Nursing Sciences Onitsha, even as he informed the Hungarian team that Archbishop Valerian Okeke had taken various noble steps and recorded tremendous achievements in education and health as part of his episcopacy.
