Shehu Sani, once Senator for Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, has questioned what former President Muhammadu Buhari did for ordinary Nigerians.
On his verified Facebook page (Shehu Sani) on Thursday, he dismissed Buhari’s claim of unchanged personal wealth as a measure of success. Instead, he said the focus should be on the people’s welfare during Buhari’s time in office.
Sani wrote, “The immediate past President was reported to have proudly said he left office with the same amount of physical wealth as when he assumed office. The Almighty Allah knows better on his claim, his family, or relations. I think what should matter most is the condition of the people who elected him after their years of sacrifices, suffering, and struggle before his ultimate victory.”
He asked, “I don’t know of any politician who the masses contributed their hard-earned money and sacrificed their lives to see him thrust to power. When he ascended and left power, have the masses fared better? Are they safer? Are their regions more developed? Are they more prosperous? Have their economies improved? Are their lives better?”
He argued these questions matter more to Nigerians. “That comparison will be more interesting and relevant to their lives,” he said. “His claim of prudence and spartan life matters less than what happened at the CBN and other parastatals under his watch.”
