Oyo State Governor ‘Seyi Makinde has reiterated his administration’s dedication to forming strategic partnerships with the United States in key areas like solid minerals development, agribusiness, education, and energy.
Speaking through Deputy Governor Barrister Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal during a courtesy visit by a US Consulate delegation from Lagos, led by Kenise Hill, Deputy Chief of the Political and Economic Section, at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan on Tuesday, 8 April 2025, Makinde outlined Oyo’s potential. He highlighted that nearly half of the state’s landmass holds valuable mineral deposits.
“We welcome partnerships that can harness these resources,” he said. “Whether your engagement is with the private sector or directly with the government, our newly established Solid Minerals Development Agency will provide accurate data and support.”
In agribusiness, Makinde stressed Oyo’s focus on food security, inviting US collaboration with institutions like the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). “The recent visit by Sierra Leone’s President to study our agribusiness model shows its growing influence,” he noted.
On education, Lawal said over 21% of the annual budget supports the sector. “We are committed to expanding both conventional and tech-driven education to prepare our citizens for a global future,” he added.
The governor also addressed energy goals, citing the ongoing 11KVA Hybrid Power Plant project. “We invite US support to bolster our energy infrastructure, which is critical for industrial growth,” he said. In response, Ms. Hill praised Oyo’s efforts and affirmed US interest in infrastructure and trade support.
“We aim to bridge US industries with Nigerian partners and explore opportunities in sectors like solid minerals,” she said, mentioning grants of about $2 million available for such initiatives.
Other delegation members—Josh Egba, Banksharon Nwaneri, and Kenechukwu Onyeke—expressed eagerness to pursue development projects in Oyo. Senior state officials, including Secretary to the State Government Professor Olanike Adeyemo, Head of Service Mrs Olubunmi Oni, and commissioners for Investment and Environment, attended the meeting.
