Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) lost an officer, Senior Correctional Assistant (SCA) Shuaibu King David during the escape incident at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Koton-Karfe, Kogi State when he attempted to foil the jailbreak.
In a statement, NCoS explained that David stood his ground in an effort to prevent the escape of inmates and protect the integrity of the custodial centre. His courageous sacrifice, the service said, reflected his unwavering dedication to service and national security.
“The acting Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, on behalf of the entire Nigerian Correctional Service, extends heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues, and loved ones of the late personnel. His service and ultimate sacrifice will forever be remembered and honoured.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service is working closely with relevant security agencies and communities to recapture those still at large and bring them to justice. Additionally, measures are being taken to enhance security in all custodial centres across the country to prevent such occurrences in the future.
“The service remains committed to ensuring the safety of officers and the security of custodial facilities nationwide” NCoS said.
On Monday March, 24, 2024, some inmates tampered with the padlock of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Koton-Karfe, Kogi State, which led to the escape of 12 of them.
Already, five of the inmates have been rearrested while seven are still at large.
“Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency. The service assures Nigerians that the safety of custodial centres remains a top priority, and measures are being reinforced to strengthen security across all facilities. The NCoS remains committed to ensuring that correctional facilities fulfill their mandate of safe custody, rehabilitation, and reintegration of inmates”.
