The UN 1000 African Women Network in New York, United States of America, has recognized the contributions of the wife of Cross River State Governor, Dr Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, on humanitarian service and social development and inducted her into the network.

She was represented at the event by the Cross River State Commissioner for Social Welfare and Community Development, Prof. Margaret Ene-Ita, who was accompanied by Esther Archibong, an Associate Professor and Special Adviser to Governor Bassey Otu on the National Social Investment Programme. Both representatives were also inducted into the network for their dedication to societal transformation.

Commenting after the induction, Prof Ene-Ita noted that Dr Otu’s remarkable contributions to humanitarian and social work has continued to set a global standard for leadership and intervention, particularly in addressing poverty, health challenges, gender-based violence and the marginalization of women and girls in politics.

“Through her NGO, ‘Humanity Without Borders’ and her social group, ‘Team Mma Adiaha,’ she has spearheaded over 5,000 impactful interventions, including provision of mother and child delivery kits, Back-to-school initiatives, award of scholarships to students, development of STEM educational curricula, donation of crutches and wheelchairs to persons living with disabilities (PLWD), combating child trafficking, promoting women’s political participation as well as promoting public-private partnerships in aquaculture and livestock.

“Others include agricultural empowerment programmes for women, financial support for PLWD, free medical outreaches, including surgeries, consultations, and eye/dental care, distribution of medical and laboratory equipment, relief materials distribution for the underprivileged, facilitation of solemn assembly in the state, promotion of women in sports and support for senior citizens and orphanages among others.

“Her unwavering dedication to women’s involvement in agriculture and economic development has been recognized at the 69th UN Convention on the Status of Women and Girls. She is also celebrated as the “Essence of Life” and “Humanity Champion” of Cross River State.

“A true pillar of strength and selflessness, Dr. Otu remains the number one supporter of the people-first governance approach. She leads with honour, value and substance, inspiring many to follow her path,” she stated.
