• Senator Bassey Otu, Arthur Eze, Ekaette Akpabio also listed for honors

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike is scheduled to be awarded an honorary degree in Political Science by the University of Calabar (Unical).

The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Florence Obi, disclosed this during a briefing to mark the commencement of activities for the 37th convocation ceremony.

Professor Obi revealed that, in addition to Nyesom Wike, the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu, an alumnus of the institution, will also receive an honorary degree in Political Science.

Other awardees listed by the institution include the wife of the Senate President, Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, who will earn an honorary degree in Educational Management, and business mogul Prince Arthur Eze, who will receive an honorary degree in Business Management.

Professor Obi further disclosed that 13,610 graduates will earn various degrees during the 37th Convocation.

Giving a breakdown, she said, “Diploma students are 181 in number, First Degrees 11,725, Master’s Degrees 876, PhDs 572, Postgraduate Diplomas (PGD) 249, and Postdoctoral Diplomas in Education 7.

“A further breakdown shows 66 First Class, 3,054 Second Class Upper Division, 7,450 Second Class Lower Division, 925 Third Class, and 7 Pass,” Professor Obi stated.

This year’s convocation also coincides with the 50th anniversary celebration of the university, which has the theme: “50 Years of Impactful Knowledge and Service to Humanity.”
