Former president, Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated his unwavering commitment to the All Progressives Congress (APC) amidst growing discontent within the party, following the recent resignation of former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufai.

He had disclosed that he informed Buhari about his decision to leave the APC before making the move. “I left the APC with his full knowledge. I visited him on a Friday and informed him of my decision to leave the party, because I consult with him on all my matters.”

El-He further revealed that Buhari gave him his blessings and even prayed for him after sharing his defection plan

Buhari’s declaration comes at a critical juncture as the APC grapples with internal strife and the looming challenge of the 2027 elections.

The APC has faced significant challenges in recent years, particularly after the 2023 elections, where dissatisfaction among party loyalists became evident. Many members felt neglected by the party leadership, leading to widespread discontent and defections.

El-Rufai’s resignation from the APC on March 10, 2025, has spotlighted these issues, as he called for opposition members to unite under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to challenge the APC’s dominance in future elections.

He had expressed disappointment with its current direction and treatment of loyal members.

In light of these developments, Buhari in a statement by his media aide, emphasised his loyalty to the APC.

He said: “I am an APC member and I like to be addressed as such. I will try to popularise the party by all means.”

Buhari expressed gratitude for the support he received from the ruling party throughout his presidency, stating, “I have nothing but gratitude for the support that the party gave me before and during my tenure as president, which I consider as the highest honour.”

He further acknowledged the sacrifices made by the party’s founding members in establishing a strong political entity dedicated to upholding Nigeria’s constitution and democracy.

“He further stated that the pains taken by the founding fathers to establish a strong party to protect our constitution, and democracy as a system of government were worthy sacrifices that should be cherished and nurtured.”
