From Noah Ebije, Kaduna
A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the National Coordinator of the Disciples of Jagaban (DOJ) supporters group, Abdulhakeem Adegoke Alawuje, has said that the survival of the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ahead of the 2027 general election is doubtful.
The APC Chieftain said PDP’s survival is doubtful following the tearing of a membership card by one of the founding members of the party, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in February 2015, when the then-opposition APC was the arch-rival to the PDP for the presidential election.
The APC Chieftain noted that the fate of PDP was sealed the day Obasanjo tore that membership card.
It would be recalled that while explaining why he tore his PDP membership card, Obasanjo said: “I’d rather sacrifice my political party for the interest of Nigeria than sacrifice my country for a political party led by a drug baron.
“I’d rather tear the PDP membership card than sit down and let Jonathan use PDP and corruption to tear my beloved country apart. I have national and international standard to maintain.”
However, in a statement on Monday by Alawuje, it noted that some of the politicians that the former President had ditched were still visiting him for alleged selfish interests.
“Today, same politicians shamelessly crawl back to the same party, visiting the same man — former President Olusegun Obasanjo — who publicly tore his PDP membership card and, in the process, tore apart the spiritual fabric of the party itself.
“I vividly recalled publishing an article in a national newspaper, warning that Obasanjo’s dramatic act of tearing his PDP membership card was symbolic — he was not just rejecting the party, but spiritually condemning its future. Unfortunately, they ignored the warning. That singular act marked the beginning of PDP’s irreversible decline.
“Since that day, PDP has existed more as a gang of desperate power seekers than as a proper political party. It was never built on ideology or service to the people but rather as a platform imposed by military dictatorship. When their ‘political godfather’ — Obasanjo — left the stage, he left behind a curse they are still battling today. No matter how much they regroup, rebrand, or rename themselves, they remain a group of individuals bound by greed and haunted by the consequences of their past actions.
“None of them can stand alone politically. They thrive only when they attach themselves to a functioning party. Their history is filled with backstabbing, betrayals, and vicious internal battles, infecting themselves with political poison that has left them permanently crippled.
“Today, they are back in each other’s arms, old enemies pretending to be friends, desperately looking for a cure to the incurable political virus they inflicted on themselves. Their new alliances are not about Nigeria’s progress; they are about self-preservation and relevance. They have nothing fresh or valuable to offer the Nigerian people.
“On the other hand, the All Progressives Congress (APC) remains the only truly living and thriving political party in Nigeria. APC is the party that welcomes progressives from all corners with open arms, celebrating diverse ideas while maintaining a clear vision for Nigeria’s future. Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari worked tirelessly for years to break the PDP’s stranglehold on power, a mission that culminated in the historic 2015 victory.
“Some PDP defectors who escaped the party’s curse joined APC then, but now they are returning to their cursed roots, hoping for relevance once again. Their departure should not alarm anyone; they were never truly progressives. They are simply political opportunists.
“The ongoing political realignment is a divine separation, separating the chaff from the grain, the cursed from the blessed. As of today, no other political party in Nigeria possesses the life, structure, and ideological clarity that APC enjoys. Even the so-called coalition parties are just recycled vehicles for the same cursed politicians seeking a new platform.
“The truth is clear: Tinubu is not Nigeria’s problem. Those blaming him for their self-inflicted misfortunes are only trying to rewrite history to cover their own failures. The PDP and its splinters destroyed themselves through greed, betrayal, and incompetence. Their fate was sealed the day Obasanjo tore that membership card.
“So, Nigerians must ask: why should Tinubu be held responsible for the self-destruction of a party he had no hand in building? Why should the man who laboured to break their grip on power now be blamed for their irrelevance?
“Let them regroup, rename, and rebrand; the Nigerian people know them for who they truly are. They are the same gang who looted our treasury, destroyed our future, and left our nation in ruins. They cannot hide under a new name or alliance.
“Tinubu remains Nigeria’s best hope for a brighter future. No amount of blackmail or propaganda can change that reality. Tinubu is a living political legend, a courageous leader, and a fearless president. Tinubu’s journey from Lagos to the presidency has been shaped by resilience, strategic brilliance, and unwavering focus. His story is one of undeniable achievements and transformative leadership, yet his detractors continue to employ blackmail, propaganda, and coordinated attacks to undermine his towering legacy.
“God knows why He placed Tinubu at this critical juncture in Nigeria’s history. His attackers too know why they are after him; because he refused to hand over what does not rightfully belong to them. Despite their plots and schemes, they know deep down that Tinubu remains a political force they cannot match. It takes a bold, fearless, and visionary leader to govern a complex and diverse nation like Nigeria. Tinubu has shown the capacity, the courage, and the foresight needed to navigate Nigeria’s turbulent waters,” the statement said.
