When Bashir Adewale Adeniyi was appointed to head the Nigeria Customs Service in acting capacity in 2023, many people were convinced that he was going to approach the task with a high level of dexterity. His confirmation as the substantive Comptroller General four months later was an eloquent testimony that he performed excellently during the period of probation.

He stands out as a multifaceted professional who has carved a niche as a master trainer, enforcement innovator and Public Relations genius, shaping impactful outcomes across diverse departments at the Nigeria Customs Service.

With over three decades of experience in Customs administration, he has managed both strategic and operational responsibilities. His profound understanding of the intricate and ever-evolving international trade landscape is complemented by his mastery of Customs regulations, laws and procedures.

Only recently, the Customs announced that it achieved its 2024 revenue target of N5.79 trillion before the end of the year. Also, the Customs seized goods worth N28.1 billion between January and November, 2024.

To ensure that he delivers his best in public service, Adeniyi had declared a state of emergency at Nigeria’s major ports which led to the interception of 48 containers of illicit pharmaceutical items and narcotics, thereby disrupting the flow of potentially harmful products. Also, the Customs under his watch seized about $8 million cash at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport and made tremendous interception of arms and ammunition in various ports across the country, thereby saving Nigeria the problem of harbouring illicit arms, at a time of insecurity.
