President Bola Tinubu, on Monday evening at the State House, Abuja, received Ghana’s President-elect, John Mahama, who paid him a courtesy visit in Nigeria following his victory in the 7 December general election.
The meeting, held at the official residence of the Nigerian president, the Aso Rock Villa, marked a significant diplomatic engagement. While details of their discussions remain undisclosed, the visit underscores the importance of regional cooperation and solidarity within West Africa.
This encounter follows a congratulatory phone call from President Tinubu to Mahama shortly after the election results were announced.
During their telephone conversation, Tinubu expressed hope that Mahama’s upcoming term would contribute to enhanced stability and development across the region.
Tinubu, who also serves as the chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), commended the people of Ghana for their unwavering commitment to democratic principles. He described Ghana as a model of political stability and transparent governance in Africa, emphasising the importance of citizens’ rights to freely elect their leaders.
The meeting between Mahama and Tinubu is seen as a significant step in strengthening ties between Ghana and Nigeria, two key players in West Africa.
