From Stanley Uzoaru, Owerri
Citizen education is to be made a compulsory subject in both primary and secondary schools across Nigeria.
The Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) Mallam Lanre- Issa Onilu, represented by the Executive Director on Publicity and Mass Mobilisation of the agency, Theresa Maduekwe, disclosed this during a sensitisation of the new chatter and National Anthem procedures in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
Maduekwe also said that the Federal Executive Council(FEC) has approved the establishment of the National Values Brigade in all primary and secondary schools in the country.
Its establishment she noted will help raise model citizens among Nigerian children as ambassadors of values.
She said that the FEC has approved the change of name of the War Against Indiscipline (WAI) Brigade to Citizens Value Brigade.
Giving the reason for the change, Maduekwe stated: “The WAI Brigade of the NOA was established during the military era but has remained an anathema as a democratic government cannot be seen to be waging war against its citizens over indiscipline”.
Speaking also during the occasion, the State director of NOA, StellaMaris Igwe disclosed that the agency will commence the training of elected public holders to enable them to be held accountable for their shortcomings.
