The Ogun State chapter of the Labour Party has held a crucial leadership meeting in Abeokuta at the weekend to address internal challenges and solidify the party’s position ahead of the upcoming local government elections.
This was contained in a statement signed by the state’s LP Publicity Secretary, Mr. Tokunbo Peters.
The meeting, convened by the party’s leadership in South West, emphasised the importance of unity among party members and stakeholders to ensure a formidable front as the elections approached.
Peters added that party leaders highlighted the growing dissatisfaction among the people of Ogun State with the current government, pointing out that many citizens feel impoverished and disillusioned by what they describe as anti-people policies. The Labour Party, according to the leadership, is poised to offer an inspiring alternative, with a commitment to improving governance at the grassroots level.
“There’s no doubt that the APC government has failed to improve the lives of the people. Nigerians, and particularly the people of Ogun State, are calling for change, and the Labour Party is ready to deliver that change,” the statement noted.
As part of its preparation for the elections, the party outlined clear criteria for those seeking to contest under its banner. Aspirants must submit a letter of expression of interest, obtain a nomination form within the party’s specified timeframe, and pay the prescribed nomination fee. Candidates must be at least 30 years old, hold a Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE), and be residents or indigenes of the local government area that they wish to represent. All candidates for chairmanship and councillorship positions will undergo thorough screening at both ward and local government levels.
With the local government elections fast approaching, the Labour Party has resolved to put all efforts into ensuring the success of its candidates, confident that the party’s message of change will resonate with voters across Ogun State.
