I have repeatedly written in this column that I will work my heart out to ensure the 2nd term re-election of Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo in 2025. I can’t wait for the campaign to be lifted to get on the campaign trail with him and also peaching for him in my local government.
And again, here are why we must set everything aside and get him re-elected for 2nd term.
I worked assiduously for his election as governor in 2022 because I believe in him and share in his dream, vision, and aspiration for a better Anambra.
From the time he took the oath of office, he hit the ground running. He has demonstrated uncommon capacity. He worked like a man who not only came prepared but a man in a hurry to prove a point – the difference between an idiot in power and a competent leader in authority.
His is governance with a destination. He has his goals and objectives clearly defined, and so far, is working and delivering on the answers.
I was privileged to serve under him for 20 months. I owe my sterling performance in the office to the opportunity he gave to me. I remember when I was first appointed that there were those opposed to my appointment. When it was time for me to go, the same people said the governor had made a big mistake to let me go. They asked where the performance and where is merit? I told them the boss is right and we serve at his pleasure.
Soludo recognised the importance of education and, unlike those that came before him, began to recruit teachers and fix the school, thereby ending the era of schools without teachers. He also recognised that our youths need a new direction. It is one thing to accuse the present generation of youths of not being productive. But what skills did we equip them with? How did we prepare them to fit into the new and emerging economy we are developing?
Yes, we have infrastructural deficits. We need super highways, railways, and magnificent palaces like Dubai, but we need the manpower that will manage the infrastructure and also a population that will use them responsibly. We need attitudinal change and value reorientation.
Most youths with certificates have no jobs because they have no skills. Hence, he introduced the one youth two skills initiative designed to create a new generation of productive youths.
Great leaders are often more than meets the eye. According to Christian Aburime in one of his dozens of writings on the man in whom we are all well pleased as Mr Governor, and I will borrow from him profusely: ‘While the public spotlight illuminates their public persona, a wealth of admirable human and personal qualities often remains concealed. These hidden depths, such as extraordinary empathy, quiet humility, flexibility, or profound intellectual curiosity, fuel their leadership and contribute to their enduring impact. It is indeed a tribute to their character that they prioritise service over self, making their private virtues instrumental to their public success.’
Aburime further had the following to say about the boss on his birthday: ‘As ndi Anambra celebrates the 64th birthday of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, today, it is an opportune moment to reflect on those sublime, less known qualities that set him apart as a leader. While his economic acumen and visionary governance have been widely recognised, there are deeper layers to his persona that often go unnoticed. Governor Soludo embodies an empathetic leadership style that genuinely cares for the wellbeing of the people of Anambra State, particularly the less privileged, women, and children.
Indeed, Governor Soludo’s leadership style has been marked by policies that reflect his deep-seated concern for the marginalised. His commitment to providing free education in state public schools is a demonstration of his belief in the life-changing power of knowledge. By ensuring that every child, regardless of their economic background, has access to quality education, he is laying the foundation for a brighter future for Anambra State. This initiative has not only increased school enrolment rates but also given hope to countless families who previously could not afford to educate their children.
In addition to his focus on the education of our children, Governor Soludo has shown consistent support for the health and wellbeing of women. His enactment of free antenatal care services in state hospitals underscores his understanding of the critical importance of maternal health. By removing financial barriers to essential healthcare services, he ensures that expectant mothers receive the care they need, reducing maternal and infant mortality rates. This policy is a clear reflection of his empathy and dedication to improving the lives of Anambra’s women and children.
His love for Anambra youth is also reflected in his numerous youth empowerment programmes in the “One youth, 2skills” programme, the “Solution Innovation District,” etc.
Beyond his policy achievements, Governor Soludo is known for his humility and simplicity. Despite his numerous accomplishments, he remains approachable and grounded. His interactions with the people of Anambra are characterised by genuine concern and a willingness to listen. He often takes the time to engage with ordinary citizens, understanding their challenges and aspirations. This humble demeanour has endeared him to many and reinforced his image as a leader who is truly in touch with the people he serves.
Governor Soludo’s democratic leadership style is another aspect that sets him apart. In state executive meetings, he is known for his inclusive approach, allowing diverse opinions to be heard and considered. He fosters an environment where popular opinion carries the day rather than imposing his own views. This respect for democratic principles and willingness to accommodate different perspectives has resulted in a more collaborative and effective governance process. It reflects his belief in the collective wisdom of his team and his commitment to serving the best interests of Anambra State.
As we celebrate Governor Soludo on his birthday, it is important to acknowledge these admirable qualities that make him an exceptional leader. His empathy, humility, and democratic values have had a profound impact on the lives of many in Anambra State. He has shown that true leadership is not just about making decisions from a position of power, but about understanding the needs of the people, supporting the vulnerable, and creating an inclusive environment where everyone has a voice.
Happy birthday, Mr Governor
