The mere mention of the name EFCC which stands as the abbreviation for the Nigeria’s numero Uno anti graft commission, the Economic and financial crime commission, in certain quarters and institutions, usually sends jitters through the spine of corrupt Homo sapiens and often times makes the hearts of personalities to palpitate fast as blood pressure rises uncontrollably. With five past leaders at the helm of its affair, the commission with the present Chairman seems more determined and undaunted to swim against the tide and achieve resounding results for the country.
Since his appointment the new Executive Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede has further helped the commission to stamp its feet on the sand of time while it is said that the fear of efcc is the beginning of wisdom for office holders around the country. Painfully, the Scrooge of the corruption pandemic continues to gradually erode our national identity as a “GREAT COUNTRY”. Many concerned citizens believe that corruption has increased geometrically at every levels of the society inclusive of both government and private institutions. The question is, who are the culprits, they are all over the places, from the government, to the market woman who arbitrarily increases her product for selfish gain. From the judge who twist judgement for selfish purposes and not absolving some media practitioners including political office holders and security personnel. Infact the corrupt practices like polluted water have permeated a large part of Nigerian consciousness , thereby giving the country a very bad name and image. The name says it all. It is not a commission of tea party neither is it a commission where felicitation and praises or encomium from various quarters should be encouraged nor entaertained. The commission is the consciousness of uprightness and integrity of what the country is aspiring to become. A country where people transact businesses with the fear of God. It is therefore believed that every staff of the commission especially those at the executive seat and those senior officers. Ought to be extra careful and very sensitive to applauses and ovation that has tints of either religious ,ethnic or group colourations. Nigerian society is replete with such tendencies. Recent event in the United Kingdom should serve as a big lesson. Immediately after the election that witnessed the emergence of the Labour Party, political party stalwarts were barred from presenting congratulatory presents neither was opportunity granted any member to attend parties but to kick the ball running. Unlike what is obtainable in Nigeria where several social parties are usually organized after every elections thereby deplictimg official time for those elected to function. In Nigeria elected officials waste much time attending organized social congratulatory functions around the country. Apart from that Greek gifts are often presented. These are gifts that facilitate requests for contracts and other assistance from the appointees. However, it rather suspicious to find chief executives and student unions traveling to Abuja, just to pay glowing tribute to the operatives and its Chairman. As an anti graft commission whose constituency covers the entire country by over looking and monitoring corrupt practices in all the financial sectors, it is therefore worrisome to find the Efcc Chairman spending precious time to attend functions where executives from other organizations would be appraising and pouring encomium on the chairman, and these are supposed to be one of the institution that ought to be under surveillance for any traces of corruption, same is applicable to the student union body whose members are today in growing number involved in cyber crime and bank account hackers across the country. By the way, are we completely oblivious of the corruptions in the oil sector?, so why would it be the chief executive of the Nigeria liquified gas commission, Dr. Philip Mshelbila that would be “expressing its satisfaction and confidence in the chairman of EFCC”. This is abnormal and unwarranted. EFCC was set up to check mate corrupt practices in all the sectors of the country and not to be receiving applauses and encomium from every Tom Dick and Harry as these could be planned distractions from its official national assignment. Infact, for the executives of the NLG to travel to Abuja at this time, means a lot and the question would be, why now that another ethnic group is at the helm of affair not his own ethnic group. Why was this felicitation not organised when lbrahim Lamorde, lbrahim Magu and Abdulrasheed Bawa were around?
It is not advisable for security personels to be open to receiving gifts and unsolicited applause as appreciation medals from organizations or groups they are ment to monitor their activities by ensuring they conform with public norms. These assignments are thankless and only the government can stretch out its hand of appreciation to these anti graft personels who are fighting corruption on behalf of the government. Truely, such appreciation move could have some underlining motives afterall, the holy book says in Jerimiah 17:9, “The heart is deceitful above all thing and desperately wicked”.

Immigration has good hands
His name is Tony Akuneme, his star showed brighter when he changed the dwindling public perception about Nigerian immigration service passport palaver, among Nigerians in the diaspora
On his assumption as the image maker, he collaborated with the popular radio presenter of “BreketeFamily “ on the Human Right Radio in Abuja and a platform where Nigerians in the diaspora phone-in to the morning programme to lay their passport complaints. Behold the idea helped to solve hundreds of passport problems being faced by Nigerians. The organization noticing his ingenuity on duty accelerated his promotion and posted him to Gwagwalada passport office, where he exhibited another public relations idea and cleared the huge number of passports awaiting approval.
This led to members of the public who ought to process their passports in Abuja metropolis where passports are delayed due to corruption at the headquarters among personnel, where finding solace at the gwagwalada passport office. Today, the Comptroller General Mrs Kemi Nandap, whose eagle eye spotted the shining star officer, Comptroller Akuneme has been posted to handle the Ilela Border Command, Sokoto. This is indeed a true confirmation that both the NIS and the Federal Government, represented by the Interior Ministry are truly set to take full ownership of the core immigration mandate of border security, which other newer agencies are seriously eyeing to take over.
The Ilela border post is notorious for importing and exporting contrabands like band foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, stolen vehicles and children trafficking. When a good hand is challenged, it spurs it for greater heights
According to Martin Luther King Jr, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy”, it is therefore hoped that Comptroller Akuneme would soon stamp his feet along the borders of Ilela, to the glory of Nigerian Immigration Service.
