Network operators, educational institutions, and other key stakeholders in Port Harcourt gained valuable insights into the latest technologies and trends shaping how different networks connect. This knowledge boost came courtesy of a “Connectivity Engagement Forum” jointly hosted by the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN) and Interconnect Clearinghouse Nigeria Limited (ICN).
The forum served as a platform for attendees to delve into the ever-evolving world of interconnection. By understanding these advancements, stakeholders can optimize internet traffic flow and create a more robustly connected Port Harcourt.
In addition to shedding light on new developments, the forum also focused on integrating regional networks and educational institutions with the infrastructure offered by IXPN and ICN. This integration has the potential to significantly improve connectivity within the region.
Speaking at the forum, IXPN CEO, Muhammed Rudman, emphasized the organization’s success in keeping half of internet traffic within Nigeria for connected ISPs. He highlighted the economic benefits of this, including reduced capital flight. Additionally, Rudman discussed the potential for establishing regional IXPs across Nigeria to further localize traffic and boost efficiency. This approach could lead to lower latency, increased revenue for ISPs, and improved system uptime.
Barclinton Ngadi, ICN’s Chief Business Development Officer, spoke about the strategic importance of their Port Harcourt data center. He described it as a vital interconnection hub for mobile operators, ISPs, and service providers in the region. Ngadi also mentioned their collaboration with West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOCC) to optimize internet distribution within Port Harcourt.
The one-day event attracted over 41 participants, including high-level decision makers from businesses, network operators, policymakers, data center managers, and educational institutions. The forum fostered a collaborative environment for discussing the future of interconnection in Nigeria, with a focus on empowering Port Harcourt and the surrounding region.
