2024 BET Awards: Tems wins, Ayra Starr, Asake lose to Tyla

Burna Boy loses to Usher

Nigerian songstress Tems and South African fledgling star Tyla were among the winners of the 2024 BET Awards which took place on Sunday, June 30.

Hosted by Hollywood actress Taraji P. Henson at Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California, the star-studded event recognised the achievements in music, sports, television and movies.

Tems, who was the only Nigerian on the winners list, was nominated alongside Gospel icons Kirk Franklin, Shirley Caesar, Maverick City, and others. She ended up winning the Dr Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award.

South Africa’s Tyla went up against Ayra Starr and Asake, clinching the Best International Act at the prestigious ceremony.

Ayra Starr, who was also nominated for Best New Artist and BET Her, lost to Tyla and Victoria MonĂŠt.

‘African Giant’ Burna Boy also lost the Best Male R&B/Pop Artist to Usher and Best Hip-Hop Artist to Kendrick Lamar.
