From Taiwo Oluwadare, Ibadan

Legal luminary and former Minister of Communications Barr Adebayo Shittu will celebrate his 71st birthday this month and reflects on his life journey. In an interview with Daily Sun, Shittu expresses gratitude to God and Chief Obafemi Awolowo for his accomplishments, particularly in politics.

He also addresses his political adversaries, urging them to take any allegations against him to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), instead of using the media to attack him. Shittu believes that if life is only evaluated based on material acquisitions, one would be ungrateful to God. He emphasises that life is more than material wealth and highlights the blessings he has received in terms of good health, a stable mind, and successful children.

When asked about his most memorable day, Shittu finds it difficult to choose just one, as he believes he has had several significant moments throughout his life. Similarly, when asked about his saddest day, he acknowledges some disappointments and betrayals but feels that the good times have outweighed the bad.

Shittu shares his political journey, starting in 1977 when he was a student at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University). Inspired by a statement made by Obafemi Awolowo, Shittu decided to join politics, aiming to represent his hometown of Saki. He encountered challenges but received support from figures like Chief Lateef Adegbite and became involved in crafting the constitution and manifestos of what later became the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN).

In regards to his time as Minister of Communication, Shittu reveals that he was interested in becoming the governor of Oyo state but was disqualified on the grounds that he did not complete National Service, despite the fact that the Nigerian constitution does not require it as a precondition for running for office. Shittu rejects allegations of embezzlement, inviting anyone with evidence against him to approach the EFCC.

When asked about his advice for the Oyo State Government, he commends Governor Seyi Makinde for the improvements he has made, such as the Moniya to Iseyin road.
