A 400-level History and International Relations student of Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU), has been shot dead by members of a cult group of the institution.
Confirming this in Umuahia, the state Commissioner for Information and Culture, Okey Kanu, who revealed that the student was killed during a clash by two rival cult groups, said Government has set everything in motion to ensure normalcy return to the institution.
The Abia State government confirmed on Monday the death of an Abia State University student during a cult clash over the weekend.
“It has come to the notice of the state government about skirmishes in Abia State University, Uturu, between student groups where a student lost his life.
“Some remedial actions have been taken to return normalcy to the institution. The state government has dispatched some security agencies to Abia State University Uturu”, he said.
He advised students to refrain from violence and face their studies.
The incident it was gathered, heightened tension in the institution which prompted security to be beefed up in the university.
Abia state command of the Nigeria police said it’s aware of the incident.
A statement it issued said police officers, in collaboration with the military, swiftly responded and arrived at the crime scene, causing the culprits to flee upon sighting the police.
“The body was evacuated from the crime scene to the morgue and exhibits has been recovered. Investigations are ongoing, and we will continue to update the public on its progress,” the statement added.
